The purpose of this research was to explore the influence of the Japanese, the Issei, and the Nisei on Japanese American identity through an examination of Japanese American literature. I considered the question of identity focusing primarily on the works of such well-known Nisei writers as Toshio Mori, John Okada, Hisae Yamamoto and the current mystery writer, Naomi Hirahara. These writers described the various hardships of the immigrant, which resulted from differences of race, culture, and nationality. Those immigrants that could overcome such difficulties and those that could not influenced the idea of identity for the generations that followed. Regardless of generation, defining what it means to be "American" remains illusive. I published 4 papers and made 2 presentations about this complex problem of identity.

本研究的目的是通过对日裔美国文学的考察，探讨日本人、伊赛人和日成人对日裔美国人身份认同的影响。我认为身份的问题主要集中在著名的西成作家的作品上，比如森敏郎、冈田俊雄、山本久男和现在的神秘作家平原直美。这些作家描述了由于种族、文化和民族的差异而导致的移民的各种苦难。那些能够克服这些困难的移民，以及那些不能影响随后几代人的身份观念的移民。不管是哪一代人，定义“美国人”意味着什么仍然是虚幻的。关于这个复杂的身份问题，我发表了4篇论文，做了2次演讲。
