本研究はイギリスの日英同盟に対する外交政策を、帝国防衛と英米協調の観点から日英両国の一次史料を用いて実証的に解明することを目的としている。本研究ではイギリスの政治家であるアーサー・バルフォアを分析の中心にしつつ、日英同盟廃棄後に論じられた日英同盟復活論も分析の対象に加えることで、日本および日英同盟に対するイギリス外交の実像を包括的に解明することを目指している。本年度の研究計画は、年度の前半はイギリスとアメリカで未公刊史料の収集および分析を継続し、後半は日本にて収集した文書の確認および再分析を行うというものであった。年度前半の史料収集については、昨年度と同様ロンドンを拠点として行った。大英図書館でバルフォア文書やカーズン文書、国立公文書館で内閣文書や外務省文書、チャーチル・アーカイブス・センターでイーシャー文書などを収集、分析し、イギリスにおける史料収集はほぼ予定通り進展した。しかしアメリカでの史料収集は十分な時間を確保することができず、断念せざるを得なかった。年度後半の日本での文書の確認および再分析については、後述する単著原稿の改訂を優先したため、当初の予定ほど時間を割くことはできなかった。しかしこれまでの確認作業の結果、イギリスの史料については現在のところ十分に集まっており、再収集の必要はないと結論づけられた。アメリカの史料に関しては、まだ不足しているので今後史料収集を進める必要がある。今年度も史料調査が研究の中心となったが、9月にイギリスのThe British International History Groupでこれまでの研究成果の発表を行った。また英語の単著の出版契約をRoutledge社と締結し、早期の出版を目指して原稿の改訂を進めているところである。
