项目摘要

本研究は、以下の三点を明らかにすることを目的とする。（1）日本のキリスト教が運営したハンセン病療養施設の歴史的展開。（2）神山復生病院の所蔵史料の検討による患者たちの生活。（3）独自性の背景としてのカトリックの信仰にもとづく思想。この目的のために、①世界のキリスト教がハンセン病をどのように捉え、患者の救援活動を行なったかについての基本的文献の収集、②日本でキリスト教がハンセン病をどのように捉え、患者の救援活動を行なったかについての文献の収集、③日本でキリスト教が運営したハンセン病療養施設の史料の収集、④神山復生病院にかかわる史料、具体的には復生記念館所蔵物の史料の収集、⑤史料の分析、⑥成果の発表、を行なう。２年めとなる2022年度には、主として①～④を実行する予定であった。しかし、新型コロナウィルスの流行が続いたため、③については、熊本のリデル、ライト両女史記念館を訪れることしかできなかった。しかし、この調査で得た資料を活用することで⑤および⑥として、日本宗教学会第81回学術大会において「宗教から国家へ－近代日本のハンセン病の救済－」を発表するとともに、『死生学年報 2033』に論文「ハンナ・リデルの藍綬褒章－『救癩』の宗教から国家への転換点」を執筆した。一方、④については新型コロナウィルスの流行継続のため復生病院記念館は2022年度は2023年2月に一度だけしか訪れることはできなかったが、学芸員の森下裕子氏とは2021年度に構築した信頼関係を維持している。
