本研究は、日本帝国期における学校教育を基盤として送出された「満蒙開拓青少年義勇軍」の〈帰還〉の局面に着目し、以下の二点の課題を解明することを通じて、「満蒙開拓青少年義勇軍」に関する基礎的事実を把握すると共に社会的認識の特徴を把握することを目的とする。第一に、〈帰還〉はどのように実施されたのか。この課題の解明は、主に占領期における〈帰還〉をめぐる政策意思の系統的把握とその具体化に関する実証的分析が中核である。第二に、〈帰還〉はどのように受容されたのか。この課題の解明は、主に日本国政府による「満蒙開拓青少年義勇軍」の処遇の特徴と体験記録等に見られる認識の特徴とに関する理論的分析が中核である。令和４年度は、資料の所在調査を基軸として、主として〈帰還〉はどのように実施されたのかという課題の解明を目指した。具体的には、海外引揚関係復刻史料の精査を主に遂行した。海外引揚に関する重要な史料群を復刻した『海外引揚関係史料集［国内篇］』全１６巻（２００１年）及び『海外引揚関係史料集成［国外篇・補遺編］』全１９巻（２００２年）によって課題に関連する基本史料を特定し得た。例示すれば次のような文書である。「外地(樺太ヲ含ム)及外国在留邦人引揚者応急援護措置要綱」「終戦直後に於ける引揚援護概況」「終戦後に於ける在外同胞の概況」「終戦ヨリ最近マデノ在外邦人概況」「引揚問題の経過と見通し」「在外同胞引揚問題に関する資料」「満洲国の終焉と満邦人の状況」「満洲北鮮ノ情況」「満洲の近況」「満洲及北鮮ニ於ケル邦人保護ニ関スル交渉経過」。１９４５年前後に焦点を合わせ、義勇隊開拓団及び義勇隊訓練所在籍者の〈帰還〉の実相を把握するためには別の方策によって追究する必要性も再確認し得た。
