本研究の目的は,イメージスキーマが,比喩の生成や理解に及ぼす影響を,実験的に明らかにすることである.実験1では、感情の比喩表現を支えるイメージスキーマについて,感情語を刺激語として、大学生被験者に,イメージの描画,イメージの言語記述,イメージの尺度評定などを求めた.その結果に基づいて,イメージ画と言語記述の分類,尺度の相関分析,クラスタ分析などをおこない,感情表現を支えるイメージの構造を明らかにした.たとえば,感情に共通イメージとしては,心理的な「バランス」イメージとその「コントロール」イメージがあった.さらに,「怒り」に対しては「爆発」イメージ,「悲しみ」に対しては「下降」イメージ,「喜び」に対しては「上昇」イメージ,「希望」に対しては「光」イメージがあった.実験2では,動詞の意味理解を支えるイメージスキーマを明らかにするために,大学生の被験者に対して,「上がる」,「引く」,「出す」,「入れる」などを含む言語表現に対するイメージ画の選択,適切性評価,具体性評価,言語記述,対象物または目的語連想,分類などを求めた.その結果,動詞の意味の派生を支えているイメージスキーマを明らかにした.たとえば,「リンゴを籠に入れる」,「作品に筆を入れる」,「プロジェクトに力を入れる」には,容器スキーマに対象物を入れるという共通のイメージスキーマ構造が見いだせた.以上の結果に基づいて,本研究では,比喩の生成・理解を支えるイメージスキーマとして,「バランス」,「コントロール」,「垂直」,「容器」などの共通するイメージスキーマの検討をおこなった.
