This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Administrative and Mentoring Core: The mentoring core provided salary support for the PI and for 5 senior mentors and core directors this reporting period. Travel expenses were covered for COBRE investigators presenting at national meetings and conferences. Ms. Nina R Majid has been the program coordinator since May 2007 and is responsible for maintaining all records related to the COBRE. She reorganized the Center office and along with the preparation and dissemination of newsletters from the Center, she is also responsible for maintaining the center web-site, informing web-site visitors with updated information of the center activities, COBRE past and current projects, news, calendar of events, and so forth. She arranges regular monthly COBRE junior investigator meetings and bi-weekly center seminars and lectures. She is responsible for orders of supplies and equipments for all projects and ensures that the expenditures for each project remain within budget allocated. The administrative CORE was also responsible for enhancing the overall infrastructure of the Center with the addition of several major equipment items. During the current budget period, the Administrative Core supported two graduate students and two postdoctoral fellows. In addition, three medical students were supported during a 8-10 weeks Summer Research Fellowship. In addition to their participation in the regularly bi-weekly scheduled Hypertension Conferences, the junior faculty investigators, PI, and senior mentors meet monthly to discuss details of the individual projects and progress being made in preparation for submission of R01 applications. During the past year, the EAC met from March 11th to 13th, 2008, to review progress by all of the junior faculty investigators. All members of the EAC participated in the review. Current members are: 1. Thomas Coffman, MD, Professor & Chief of Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. 2. Norman Rosenblum, MD, Associate Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto and Senior Scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario. 3. John McGiff, MD, Professor & Chairman of Pharmacology, New York Medical College, New York. 4. Michael Klag, MD, MPH., FACP, Dean, Bloomberg School of Public Health, The John Hopkins University, School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland. 5. Orson Moe, MD, Professor Internal Medicine in Nephrology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Texas. Dr. Orson Moe, a new member, was added to assist Dr. Hering-Smith in the development of her project. The March EAC site visit proved very productive, producing several helpful suggestions for the junior faculty investigators on the COBRE. The Committee members listened to presentations by junior faculty and provided recommendations for enhancing the projects. The EAC members evaluated the investigators grant applications and offered constructive suggestions to increase the probability for funding. Throughout the year, the EAC members have provided their valuable services in reviewing the research plans of each new junior faculty investigators.
