This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We continue to make improvements to the distributed control system (DCS) and accompanying graphical user interface Blu-Ice, which we first used for non-crystalline scattering/diffraction experiments in 2004, in an effort to make beam line control and data collection highly efficient, intuitive, and user friendly. The new and improved capabilities developed this year include: 1) control of a flow cell by Blu-Ice and its incorporation in data acquisition; 2) control and incorporation in data acquisiton using the sample selector, making it possible to automatically acquire data from multiple sample aliquots of limited volume; 3) new tools for staff members to customize beam line control and optimization; 4) incorporation of an energy-resolving x-ray detector (Vortex) into the DCS and Blu-Ice. The DCS/Blu-Ice has been rountinely used for all experiments on BL4-2 with a few exceptions in time-resolved data collection, which is accomplished by the Hamamatsu image-intensified detector system and the EMBL data collection system. For the last few months, efforts have been concentrated on a major upgrade of the DCS/Blu-Ice in concert with the construction of the new BL4-2 station. The upgraded DCS/Blu-Ice will have a new user administration protocol as well as the most recent hardware servers, and will work with all the new hardware to make beam line control and data acquisition more secure, efficient, and user friendly once completed early next year.
