英文摘要
This CTSA application from Washington University in St. Louis (WU) is built on a long institutional history of outstanding biomedical research, research training, and patient care. WU is the recipient of the 4 clinical research and training grants that form the basis of the CTSA (GCRC currently in its 45th year of funding, K12 multidisciplinary clinical research career development award, K30 clinical research curriculum award, and T32 predoctoral clinical research training grant). Another critical element in the present application is WU's new Biomed 21 strategic initiative to build multidisciplinary, collaborative research in genome sciences, biological imaging, and clinical investigation. All these elements will be conjoined along with existing resources at WU to form the foundation of a transformational new Institute of Clinical Sciences (ICS). The ICS by implementing the 15 Program Functions that are described in detail in this application will conceptually and operationally reinvent and reinvigorate clinical and translational research and clinical research training at WU, for now and in the future. Central to the transformation that will be lead at WU by the ICS is the development of an unprecedented level of partnership with other academic, healthcare and scientific institutions that complement our core expertise in laboratory and clinical research and research training. Our partners include BJC Healthcare, an integrated academic and community health care delivery system, St. Louis University Schools of Public Health, Medicine and Nursing and Centers for Healthcare Ethics, Health Law and Healthcare Outcomes, Barnes Jewish School of Nursing and Allied Health, University of Missouri St. Louis and Southern Illinois at Edwardsville Schools of Nursing and St. Louis College of Pharmacy as well as key biomedical and pharmaceutical companies in the St. Louis area. The combination of the resources at WU coupled with the complementary resources of our partners creates an outstanding environment in which basic laboratory discoveries can be made and then translated into clinical research protocols and ultimately into advances in clinical practice and patient care through extensive community interactions and commercial partnerships. To ensure the success of the ICS, WU has made substantial commitments of space and financial support. Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children's Hospitals our academic hospital partners and BJC Healthcare our affiliated health system have all made substantial commitments to the clinical research activities of the ICS. These additional resources coupled with the existing high quality programs in clinical and translational science ensure that Washington University with be an outstanding recipient of an Institutional Clinical and Translational Science Award.
