This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Macaques have long been the primate model of choice for studies of hormone action in the endometrium. The African green monkey or Vervet is a menstruating nonhuman primate with menstrual cycles of similar duration to those of macaques and women. However, menstruation is very light in this species and daily testing by vaginal swab is required in order to detect menses. The physiological mechanism underlying the attenuated menstruation in the Vervet has not been thoroughly explored. Our goal was to assess the cyclic effects of estradiol and progesterone on the regulation of menstruation in this species.
