This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
During natural infection with the Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), African green monkeys (AGM) do not develop AIDS though high viral loads are persistent. SIVagm infection in Pig-tailed macaques does lead to AIDS, characterized by CD4+ T-cell depletion and opportunistic infections.
In the current study, we are comparing infection of SIVagm.Sab92018 in Pig-tailed macaques and African green monkeys. It is thought that the balance of innate pro- vs. anti-inflammatory responses may contribute to the distinction between pathogenic and non-pathogenic SIVagm and other lentiviral infections. For both species, we are performing transcriptional profiling using our macaque microarrays comparing gene expression changes in each animal for multiple tissues over the infection time course. Additional parameters include viral load determination, cell counts, cytokine plasma levels, antibody response, phenotypic changes, T cell responses (cytokine secretion and proliferation), etc.
