This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Pharmacologic induction therapy involves the intentional activation of the replication of latent virus combined with anti-viral therapy. This approach in HIV/AIDS patients receiving HAART could activate production of virus, which will then be targeted and inhibited by the anti-viral inhibitors in HAART. Prostratin is a protein kinase activator that has been tested for activation of latent HIV in cell culture systems and in the SCID-hu mouse model. The compound prostratin, a phorbol ester, activates protein kinase C, which subsequently activates cell signaling pathways that regulate viral transcription.
