Research in my lab focuses on the molecular genetics of Rhizobium leguminosarum, a bacterium capable of forming nitrogen fixing nodules on the roots of several important crop plants. Various projects in the lab are directed at understanding the role of genome organisation (particularly the large number of plasmids) in the biology of Rhizobium, and at identifying factors which contribute to the ecological success of individual strains of this bacterium. Many of the experiments require measurements of gene expression using gene fusions to the lacZ and gusA genes, and various other enzyme assays are also requried. This application is a request for funding for a spectrophotometer to use in enzyme assays and other molecular biological protocols. This instrument would be shared with Dr. H. Ceri's lab, which is also involved in molecular studies of bacteria, particularly with regard to their ability to form biofilms. Studies in the Ceri lab focus on gene expression in biofilms and the role of biofilms in infections and in resistance to antibiotics.
