Today, billion of dollars are being spent world wide in areas such as robotics, health care, and Internet. New developments in these areas will play an instrumental role in shaping this century. A robot must be safe and reliable. Over the years reliability and safety of robots have become a pressing issue because of fatalities and other problems. In health care reliability and safety of equipment and humans have also become a pressing issue because of high fatalities and cost. For example, in the United States health care system over 100,000 Americans die each year due to human errors. The financial impact of these errors on the US economy is estimated to be somewhere between $17 billion and $29 billion. Today, Internet has become an important day to day tool. Its reliability and security are as important as the reliability and safety in the other two areas. Thus, this reliability and safety research will be directed in three main areas: (i) survey of Canadian industrial, health care, and Internet user sectors; (ii) identification of methods and techniques in use in performing reliability and safety analyses; (iii) development of new methods, techniques, and models. This research will result in better knowledge concerning the state of robot, health system, and Internet reliability and safety problems in Canadian industrial sectors and other areas, identification of the most useful methods and techniques for use by all these sectors, and the development of new approaches and procedures for situations where current techniques fail.
