This is an application for an analytical instrument to be used in research on the mechanisms, kinetics, and outcome of metal-catalyzed organic reactions. Gas chromatography (GC), a common and essential tool in organic and organometallic research, is a powerful tool for characterizing and quantifying molecules even where these are present as mixtures with other compounds. The GC instrument will be used to study the efficiency and selectivity (including enantioselectivity) of new catalysts for ring-closing metathesis, one of the most powerful methods now available for construction of cyclic molecules, which yet suffers from limited catalyst selectivity and lifetime. It will also allow us to study the efficiency of tandem catalysis reactions, in which we carry out sequential transformations of organic molecules via a single catalyst precursor, by transforming the catalyst in situ. These methodologies are already important in materials design: we believe that coupling metathesis with functionalization catalysis will open up new, highly efficient, environmentally more benign routes to organic targets important in pharma and elsewhere.The requested instrument will eliminate a major bottleneck in our research: we presently rely on access to a GC belonging to another research group, which is operating at capacity, and which is limited in its ability to analyze many of our samples owing to their relative complexity, and hence involatility.
