This application is for funding to purchase a liquid scintillation counter. Liquid scintillation counters are used to detect low levels of radiation in biological samples. Typically, this radiation is generated from a radioactively labelled molecule that is of biological interest. Scientists use these molecules to study numerous aspects of cellular function in both normal and diseased states. This equipment is a basic feature of all modern medical research departments and will allow many researchers at the University of Ottawa to progress towards making fundamental discoveries in the life sciences that will eventually aid human health.
