Our environment is constantly changing which is reflected by the changing of land surface features such as buildings, roads and trees. In some parts of the world, the distribution and density of these features change rapidly, such as fast urbanization in large cities, and changes after major natural disasters. It is important to detect such changes accurately so that the physical and human processes can be more fully understood. With the increasing availability of remotely sensed data from multi-temporal, high-spatial resolution multispectral, hyperspectral, laser scanning and radar sensors, it is now possible to effectively monitor these changes without involving excessive manual and field work.
