A market assessment is necessary to establish the priorities that will dictate the next steps for the development of a novel Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) instrument. Our prototype SPR device is label-free, inexpensive, exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity and is suited for the analysis of biomarkers in crude biofluids. These achievements were the consequence of a novel SPR instrument design based on a dove prism, and a sensing chip technology based on micropatterned gold films and anti-fouling peptide surface chemistry. The prototype we have developed is portable and thus, is suited for point-of-measurement applications such as point-of-care diagnostics or on-site detection of contaminants or pathogens. The resolution of our portable SPR instrument rivals the one obtained with more expensive lab-based SPR instruments. Our sensing chip technology improves the sensitivity by more than a factor of 3 relative to other commercial sensing technologies, reducing error. In addition, our peptide monolayers prevent fouling of the sensing chip, and thus, false positive responses, which is necessary for point-of-care biomedical applications.
