The proposed project is a collaborative research partnership between Dr. Park of SFU and Recon Instruments Inc. Recon develops and markets a display system (micro-optic display) for goggles worn in active sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Goggles instrumented with Recon's system are also equipped with a fully embedded computer system and a collection of sensors. This makes it possible to present information related to the user's current activity in real-time. Such an information display includes data such as the wearer's current speed, altitude, location and maps. The available sensors include an accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer that together form an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Using the outputs of an IMU, an inertial navigation system (INS) estimates a body's position and orientation in connection with gravitational field and Earth's magnetic field models. When combined with signals from the other on-board sensors, i.e. global positioning system (GPS) and altimeter, these sensors form a GPS/INS system that could accurately recognize the type of activity performed (e.g., jumps) by the wearer as well as aiding in personal navigation.
