Arthroscopic surgery, as a minimally invasive surgery, requires the surgeon to develop highly specialized techniques such as the fine manipulation of arthroscopic tools while visualizing the surgical region of interest through an endoscope that is displayed on a monitor. In addition, x-ray fluoroscopy is frequently used to evaluate accuracy and quality of surgical treatment and to visualize surgical tools within the joint during surgery. Training other surgeons in arthroscopy requires the use of an expensive x-ray fluoroscopy system (including radiation safety procedures), and such training is limited to one surgical trainee at a time.
