It is the surface which bounds the materials and interacts with the surrounding environment. Surface coating techniques can be used to develop a wide range of functional properties, including physical, chemical, electrical, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties at the required substrate surfaces for extensive applications in the automotive, aerospace, missile, power, electronic, biomedical , textile, petroleum, petrochemical, chemical, steel, power, cement, machine tools, construction industries. This proposed research aims to develop technologies to engineer surface coatings at the nanometer scale for advanced industrial and biomedical applications. One goal is to develop nanostructured diamond coatings for artificial hip joints to improve their service lifetime. It is expected to lead the development of new artificial joints to avoid surgical revision for a higher quality of life. Another goal is to engineer diamond coating with controlled nanotip structure for the development of new high technology product: nano-actuators. The third goal is to develop new diamond based nanostructured coatings and to investigate their basic aspects in order to generate new knowledge in the area of nanomaterials. The fourth goal is to train graduate students in nanoscience and nanotechnology to meet the demand of highly qualified personnel in the area.
