We propose to develop a new structure for product definition, in which plurality of options are provided in material selection. Such structure can be seen as an extension of the traditional tree-shape approach, known as the Bill-Of-Materials. While the added flexibility will open up a wide range of product design solutions, a formal definition of such a flexible structure has not been made available yet. Therefore, the main objective is to formalize the information structure to capture the plurality of design options in a comparable way to the traditional framework. This work will have prepared a very important ground for further developments on product design optimization and production system design.
