SAIT Polytechnic is requesting support from the NSERC Applied Research Tools and Instruments grant program for the purchase of a collection of equipment for conducting chemical analysis of formation water. Formation water, also called produced water, is mainly salty water trapped in the hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir and sub-surface environments. It is brought up to the surface along with oil or gas during energy production. The formation water can contain complex mixtures of proppants (additives in formation water), oil, hydrogen sulphide, compounds of iron, nitrogen and phosphorous, silica, scale and corrosion inhibitors, microbes, metals and salts, which need to be analyzed before and after treatment for either reuse or disposal.
