Our laboratory has had a longstanding interest in the chemical synthesis and biochemical properties of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Our research goals include gaining a detailed understanding of inter- and intramolecular interactions between various nucleic acid components, or between nucleic acids and proteins as these key biochemical processes occur. We approach all of these studies through the use of chemically-modified nucleosides and oligonucleotides. We also devote an enormous effort to study nucleic acid structure. Our scientific approach combines solution and solid-phase syntheses, drug discovery, spectroscopic analysis, and molecular biology techniques. As such, the proposed work exposes students to nucleic acid chemistry and biology, analytical skills, and strategies to develop candidate molecules into useful drugs.
