Organofluorine chemistry: New synthetic methods and new reactivity

Fluorinated molecules occupy a significant place in pharmaceutical/medicinal, agrochemical, and material sciencesd ue to the unique properties of the fluorine atom. For example, as many as 30-40% of agrochemicals and 20-25% of pharmaceuticals on the market are estimated to contain fluorine. Also, fluorine is used to tag biochemical probes for the study of various biological processes and the fact that 19F nuclei is NMR active even allows the use of in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Finally, 18F-positron-emitting tomography (PET) is used daily for diagnosing, staging, and detecting the recurrence or progression of various diseases including cancer. Nevertheless, further development of these fields as well as others are closely related to the development of practical, selective and efficient methodologies for the synthesis of fluorinated molecules.
