Organofluorine Chemistry: From New Synthetic Methods to New Reactivity

The unique properties of fluorine are key in why this atom and fluorinated groups (CF3, CF2H, etc.) are now key substituents on organic compounds for applications in chemical biology, in medicinal chemistry, in agrochemistry, and in the material sciences. This field needs a deeper fundamental understanding of fluorinated molecule reactivity, and innovative, practical methods for their synthesis. The long-term vision of my research program is to contribute state-of-the-art methods for the synthesis of organofluorine molecules, and to broaden the collective knowledge of the reactivity/behaviour of this unique class of compounds. During the last funding period, we accomplished significant advances that have improved synthetic, medicinal, and bioorganic chemistry. This Discovery Grant renewal will continue this successful program. We intend to concentrate our efforts in the next five years in three major research areas with significant high-impact potential: 1) Exploring new frontiers in the synthesis of pentafluorosulfanylated compounds 2) Exploiting the C-F bond as a directing group 3) Improving the synthesis of monofluoroalkenes
