Flood risk assessment and mapping in Canada has not traditionally incorporated an ice jam flooding
component. Extending flood risk management to include ice impacts is, however, crucial for a true assessment
of flood risk.
This is a new research collaboration between the public and private sector. Karl-Erich Lindenschmidt,
from the Global Institute for Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan, brings expertise in river ice
modelling and flood risk assessment. The industrial partner, Stantec, is an architecture and engineering
company that provides technical support to government agencies, property developers, insurance companies
and communities regarding natural and manmade hazards and disasters. The Alberta offices of Stantec would
like to extend their consulting repertoire to include ice jam flooding events in their flood risk assessment and
mapping capabilities, which is a novel approach in Canada.
The specific objectives of this research are to:
-extend current ice-jam flood frequency analysis techniques using river ice modelling tools to develop an
ice-affected flood frequency curve
-map flood extents of various ice jam flood water levels to assess the flood hazard and risk.
-incorporate ice jam modelling into flood hazard and risk assessment to provide a basis for effective flood
mitigation programs.
Benefits to Canada include: (i) provision of a novel tool for a company with offices across Canada to
incorporate ice jam modelling into flood hazard and risk assessment and (ii) better understanding the risk of ice
jam flooding to property and human life and to develop effective flood mitigation and prevention strategies.
