Contactless capacitive electrodes are a promising and more comfortable alternative to the conventional Ag/AgCl direct-skin contact electrodes for ECG monitoring. These electrodes can be embedded into a patient's bed and therefore can notably facilitate clinical procedure for long-term monitoring. However, despite their recent commercial success, they still suffer from high sensitivity to motion artifacts and body posture changes during sleep. The aim of this project is to develop a sensor selection algorithm that can detect the highest quality ECG signal from an array of 64 capacitive sensors implemented on the patient's mattress. Regardless of patient position on the mattress and whether he is sleeping on his back, front or the sides, the algorithm should allow the automatic selection of sensors that give the most appropriate ECG signals for monitoring and diagnosis purposes.
