Safe storage guidelines for hemp seeds

Canada annually produces more than 27,000 tonnes of hemp seeds and unit price of hemp seeds is more valuable than other most common crops. The stored hemp seeds spoil more easily than many other stored crops, and about 5% of hemp seeds are rejected each year due to heat damage, bacterial contamination, and fungal deterioration. To decrease storage loss, safe storage guidelines for many crops have been developed. There are no safe storage guidelines for hemp seeds. Hemp farmers currently use the guidelines for canola and there is no scientific evidence to support this practice. This proposed research aims to establish the relationship of Equilibrium moisture content - Temperature - Equilibrium relative humidity and develop the safe storage guidelines for hemp seeds. The established relationship and developed safe storage guidelines, which will be used by the Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods and posted by the company through the social media such as twitter and published in scientific journals and conferences, will guide farmers to dry hemp seeds to the correct moisture content and store the hemp seeds at recommended dockage percentage, moisture content and temperature.
