Even though swathing canola is the standard harvest method for most canola producers, the practice of straightcutting (direct combining) has become gradually accepted by some Canadian farmers. Desiccants (such asGlyphosate and Reglone) may be applied prior to straight cutting because application of desiccants can result inthe uniform dry down of the canola plants on the entire field. Different harvesting methods influence the initialstorage conditions of canola and therefore affect the quality of the stored oilseed. It is not known whether thesedifferent harvest methods influence storability or not. We were approached by Bayer CropScience Inc. todesign a study to investigate the safe storage time of the canola seeds harvested by straight cutting andswathing with or without application of desiccants. Based on the collected data in this study, guidelines of safestorage time of canola with different harvested methods will be developed and compared with publishedguidelines in the literature. Using the results from this study, Bayer will be able to provide scientificallysupported guidelines to farmers for appropriate harvest and storage methods.
