Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry allows the rapid characterization of large molecules such as peptides, proteins and polymers. There is currently no MALDI mass spectrometer in the chemistry department at the University of Toronto. There are 10 research groups from within the chemistry department that require student access to a MALDI-MS instrument on a daily basis to realize their research goals. Due to the complete breakdown of our current instrument, we now have no internal facility for such measurements and have had to seek specialized service facilities to run these analyses for us. Much of our work depends on this technique. Access to a MALDI mass spectrometer would enable hands-on training, develop skills in MS interpretation, and greatly enhance the pace of scientific discovery in a diverse group of research programs.
