According to various studies, construction productivity is decreasing while productivity in the other industry has doubled in forty years. Moreover, the amount of waste in the supply chain related to poor management of information and material is around 30%. Building Information Modelling (BIM) was advertised as the technological solution to solve these problems, but proof of their successful resolution using BIM is yet to be demonstrated. The core issue is the lack of theoretical and empirical foundations to its implementation. The root problem is about information processing. While BIM is providing a shared platform to exchange data between different software, it is an incomplete solution, not addressing socio-technical aspects of workflow and dataflow management.The main objective of this research is to optimize the information processing using BIM or other technologies. Specific objectives are: (1) to develop design rules and related Application Programming Interfaces (API) for data production and exchanges in the design process aiming at continuous optimization; (2) to reduce overproduction of information in this process, deriving best practices from manufacturing.One original aspect of this research is the methods devised to generate and formalize new practice knowledge. This research builds on new approaches developed in Information Technology and Organisational Science in which a cycle of iterations between investigations and interventions bring changes and formalize practice knowledge regarding streamlining of the information processing. By leveraging BIM potential using the results of this research, it will contribute to improve Canadian construction industry delivering sustainable buildings in a more efficient way, and increasing the productivity while reducing the amount of waste in resources and material encountered in the construction process. The aim is to offer a better building product at a lower cost to Canadians while making our industry more competitive.
