A unique high-current short-pulse generator has been developed through the years at Polytechnique Montreal.An innovative design of the core technology has been developed to reach performance unmatched incomparison with available commercial current generators. The design is modular in the sense that the mainmodule can be combined with different types of slave modules to optimize the current generator characteristicsfor a desired application. In all cases, the shape of the current pulse (square, sinusoidal, etc.) can be arbitrarydefined by the user. The main strength of the design comes from the high precision in the shape of thegenerated current pulse. In its simplest form, the generator can create an almost perfectly square impulse,which is very challenging in the microsecond regime and at very high currents (more than 100 A)simultaneously. Furthermore, the noise generated is very low.Considering that high-current short-pulse generators are used in a number of industries, the core technologydeveloped at Polytechnique can be easily adapted to produce current generators for numerous applications at acompetitive price. The goal of the current market assessment is thus to evaluate which applications representthe most promising opportunity for the technology, both in terms of the size of the addressable market, but alsoof the significance of the competitive advantage that the technology could provide.
