The purpose of this project is to develop intelligent control and estimation techniques for solar thermalwindows and garage doors that optimize energy efficiency while ensuring safe and reliable operation. Theintelligent techniques will be based on machine learning strategies (e.g., artificial neural networks) and variablestructure theory. The proposed research offers improvements to control and estimation accuracy, robustness toexternal disturbances, reliability, and safety. The developed techniques will help sustainable or 'green'industries that deal with control techniques and mechatronic systems. Furthermore, the technology will betransferable to clean energy industries to ensure more reliability, efficiency, and cost-efficient solutions to helpthem remain competitive in the market. In addition, the proposed project will provide training for a graduatestudent and team of undergraduates on advanced mechatronic systems in modeling, sensing, and control. Thesehighly qualified personnel (HQP) will contribute to the workforce of Canadian automation and manufacturingindustries.
