We have designed a novel, low-cost, platform, wireless sensor technology that can be applied to a wide range of chemical and biological sensing applications. Our initial target application for the platform is a rapid, point-of-care, bacterial identification diagnostic. The system provides a unique way to identify bacterial species in a liquid sample, by combining our ion-sensing microchips with bacteriophages, which are highly-selective viruses that infect only bacteria. The test provides results in 15 minutes. Our fully functional system prototype has been verified through testing with clinical bacterial samples from Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. Example markets for this technology are medical diagnostics, food safety testing, and water quality monitoring. This grant will fund a market assessment study to help us determine where to focus the commercialization efforts for this unique rapid bacterial identification system. ****
