The Canadian Foundation for Infectious Diseases estimates that 25% of all physician visits are related to infectious diseases
and result in a total cost of >$12billion annually for treatment and lost productivity. We have developed a disposable
microchip that is able to identify and type live bacteria in less than ten minutes with no bacterial culturing steps required.
This technology combines the specificity of viruses (phages) that infect and kill bacteria with the sensitivity of integrated
electronic circuits to create a low-cost, portable detection system. The system can also be used to allow rapid antibiotic
susceptibility profiling that would provide positive antibiotic stewardship.
