英文摘要
A military commander must have an understanding of the current environment in order to effectively lead and command a platoon through an area of operations. This includes, but is not limited to, knowledge of the physical terrain, structures, and the location and strength of friendly and enemy forces. Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is interested in novel methods of displaying this information to commanders. Of particular interest is assisting with wayfinding and situation awareness in contested urban environments. Uncharted Software, a Toronto based company specializing in the development of novel visualization software, has developed (and patented) Mirror in the Sky (MIS), a head up display for wayfinding tasks in unfamiliar environments, that is anticipated to be suitable for DRDC's needs. To evaluate that fit, the University of Toronto will produce novel research findings on how users perceive, understand and use the contents of MIS representations. These findings will benefit Uncharted Software and DRDC as future prospective vendor and receiver, respectively, of the technology. Moreover, MIS technology has the potential to significantly impact wayfinding for civilians, such as drivers and pedestrians, opening up further markets for the industry partner.
