My research takes a unique approach to examining the connection between genetic diversity and biological complexity by combining study of two distinct systems: the fruit fly model genetic system and the microbial community inhabiting acid mine drainage. I examine the connection in both systems using modern genomic and bioinformatic techniques applying what we learn in one system to help direct study in the other. Through this reciprocal process, I am able to begin to answer both basic and applied questions focused on topics from gene regulation to metabolic networks to environmental damage and remediation.
