Biomass is a rich source of high value bioproducts and bioactive compounds. The focus of this work is upon the production of high value carbohydrate monomers and oligosaccharides from raw materials rich in mannan, arabinan and xylan, for use in animal and human health. We will develop and screen different process alternatives, including high temperature extraction (pretreatment), enzyme hydrolysis, and downstream purification steps to produce high purity bioproducts. These products will be characterized to assess purity and composition, including evaluating the degree of polymerization of the oligosaccharides using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The different products will also be evaluated in vitro to assess their ability to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, and to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, key drivers of health for humans and animals. Products that effectively control pathogenic bacteria have potential application as natural growth promoters, displacing antibiotics.
