The main goal of this proposal is to explore theoretically quantum transport properties of topological insulator materials and nanostructures. These properties are determined by a highly non-trivial interplay of topology, disorder-induced quantum interference, and electron-electron interaction. The theory that we are going to develop will give specific predictions for transport characteristics, including their dependence on temperature, magnetic fields, and bias voltage. Our particular interest will be devoted to those properties that may serve as hallmarks of topological materials. The proposal consists of three interrelated parts (Work Packages). The first part is concerned with the transport properties of strongly interacting helical states in 2D topological insulators. The second part deals with emergent topological states driven by electron-electron interaction or by interaction of electrons with light. The third part is devoted to transport and magnetotransport in various realizations of Weyl semimetals. The planned work has multiple close connections with recent, current, and planned activities by many experimental groups that study transport properties of topological insulators and Weyl semimetals within SPP 1666. Comparison of our predictions with measurements by these experimental groups will be highly useful.
