It is planned to provide a replacement console for a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, to be operated with an existing cryomagnet, since the current 400 MHz spectrometer (set up in 1999) is outdated and does not allow measurements of sufficient quality and reliability any more. The main application area is the analysis of molecular transport processes in soft materials. Studied systems range from electrolyte materials to functional colloidal systems and porous materials. Physicochemical studies employing dynamic NMR methods to characterize transport of charge and matter are the focus, however complemented by structural studies. The main experimental methods are based on pulsed field gradient NMR (PFG-NMR). This includes multinuclear diffusion measurements as well as electrophoretic NMR (eNMR), complemented by spin relaxation. In particular eNMR in Li+-conducting battery electrolytes is a major focus, since this method - only recently established for concentrated electrolytes – allows a full characterization of the transport behavior of all involved species, employing 1H, 7Li and 19F electrophoretic mobilities. Application to a variety of different classes of electrolytes is planned, such as liquid organic electrolytes, ionic liquids, salt-in-polymer and polymer gel electrolytes. The aim is to resolve the role of ion correlations and to fundamentally understand Li+ transport mechanisms on the molecular level. For this purpose a digital state-of-the-art NMR spectrometer, consisting of a modern console, digital gradient amplifiers und a broadband gradient probe head for multinuclear gradient experiments is required.
