Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) is routinely used to enrich for a specific cell type from a heterogeneous cell suspension. FACS sorting relies on the binding of fluorescence-tagged antibodies to specific biomarkers such as receptors on the surface of the cell. The characteristic fluorescent properties activated by laser emissions readily identify cells of interest and permits their separation at exceptional purity. This is an effective and rapid approach to isolate many biological cell types and will catalyze much deeper levels of our ongoing biological research that are aimed at integrating intracellular signaling events with functions in the specific cell types of interest. The dual laser Sony SH800 high-speed FACS with a biosafety cabinet is requested to support NSERC-funded research work in the fields of and cell biology, genetics, biotechnology, infection, immunity, and inflammation. This equipment will sort cells that require biohazard level II containment, a feature not currently available at Queen's University. The biosafety feature is essential to limit the exposure of highly qualified personnel (HQP) to infectious agents and to maintain the integrity of the biological samples for transplantation or culture following collection.
