The focus of the study is a spectral imaging detection of cancer or other pathological lesions in hardly approachable ducts such as breast milk, pancreatic, Biliary ducts. The malignancies in breasts, Biliary ducts, gold bladder, pancreas are frequently developed within the duct epithelium, and hence detectable via ducts. Most of these malignancies are aggressive leaving a short time (months) for in-time diagnostics and successful consequent surgical interventions. The primary aim of the project is to develop and test a versatile research micro-endoscopic system. The work objectives include development of a tunable spectral band endoscopic light source based on acousto-optical filter for spectral reflectance imaging and laser diode array for excitation-emission imaging data collection to facilitate imaging of tissue morphological parameters, cell metabolism and local blood content. The biotissue examination by mean of the optical technology proposed will be combined with traditional diagnostic technique such as pathohistology for validation and improvement. As a result of the study, a high-qualified personal will be trained in the field of Biophotonics in academic-clinical-industrial environment. It is anticipated that the project will contribute into the development of a strategical direction bringing better understanding of the basic mechanisms of pathological development in ducts, microscale high resolution imaging technique, new generation micro-endoscopy technology including endoscopic light therapy with simultaneous guidance and monitoring, development of realistic tissue phantoms to reduce usage of lab animals and may lead to the development of the micro-endoscopic video facility and super resolution (subwavelength domain) endoscopic modalities.
