Mosquitos are ectoparasites that are carriers of viruses and a well-known vector of human diseases. Currently, the most common ways in which to deter mosquitos are through the use of chemical methods, e.g., using pesticides or mosquito repellent to deter and kill mosquitos. However, chemical sprays and repellents can have adverse effects on human health. To address this problem, CO2 and heat attraction has gained popularity, but current methods use light fossil fuels to produce this heat and CO2. This requires constant refilling of a propane/natural gas tank and can be considered harmful to the environment because of the combustion of fossil fuels that are not renewable.
The company-specific problem is to eliminate the need for combustion all together and replace the current CO2 production by using a novel CO2 adsorption capture process from atmospheric air. Such a process would use an adsorbent to capture CO2, which is naturally present in the atmosphere, and release it back into the environment during specific times of the day when mosquito presence is the highest and at a time at which humans are affected the most. This adsorption during the day and desorption at peak times of the day would require an energy source to desorb CO2. This energy source would be provided by a battery that would be charged during the day and would be activated when needed.
Fineline Manufacturing Inc. proposes that a system such as this could replace the light fossil fuel burning mosquito trap currently in place. Therefore, an in-depth knowledge of adsorbents and adsorption systems will be required, with an innovative design for the system, with the overall goal of producing a market-ready product using this knowledge.
