Use of plant growth promoting bacteria in aquaponics facility

Much of our food is shipped from long distances, from rural areas or from farms in distant countries. Theconcept of urban farming is being championed more and more because of the energy and money savingsinvolved, and also the because of the involvment of locals with the production of ones food. One promisingidea for food production is that of aquaponics, the combination of fish raising facilities and plant growthplatforms for salad and herb greens. By combining the two systems, plants can grow on fish waster and purifyit at the same for reuse for the fish. One drawback is that plants grow better in the company of bacterialassociates, normally derived from soil, that can move into their tissues and help provide growth hormones andmolecules to help capture nutrients. This research is aimed at screening bacteria for their abilities to improvethe salad green and herb germination, growth and nutrient acquisition rates in aquaponics systems.
