CalAgua Innovations is a company dedicated to cleantech. This group of elite scientists including two Canada Excellence Research Chairs are committed to minimizing or reducing environmental impacts from kerogen production. Kerogen is the most abundant source of organic hydrocarbon compounds on earth. Heated kerogen converts to liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons The interest in producing liquid fuels from kerogen is part of a broader global movement exploring unconventional hydrocarbon resources and offers a potential 5 trillion barrels equivalent if they can be sustainably developed. The production of kerogen from shale oil, is costly economically and environmentally.CalAgua's proprietary solvent will dissolve and extract kerogen, then convert it to a low sulphur diesel fraction requiring minimal upgrading and refining. The low sulphur content of liquid fuels produced by the CalAgua process produces a diesel product that is appropriate for application in new low carbon fuel standards for ground and marine transport regulations. This recovery process has reduced costs - economically and environmentally. CalAgua is working with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Environmental Technologies applied research group to bring an innovative technology to market. CalAgua Innovations specializes in developing chemical solvents and processes that reduce energy and water consumption in conventional crude oil production. They have developed a novel solvent-based extraction process: Ionic Liquid for Kerogen Extraction that is anticipated to produce a superior petroleum product from kerogen extracted from oil shale. The end-product is lighter and cleaner than most crude oil. CalAgua is committed to protecting fresh water resources and working to ensure energy resources are produced without a negative impact on water quality or availability. Refining the Kerogen process and transferring that knowledge to other processes will benefit the entire oil and gas industry.
