St. Lawrence College has entered in a strategic engagement partnership with Plantee Bioplastics Inc. to investigate the impact of various water qualities to their novel plant-based biodegradable fishing material. Plastic pollution from fishing gear has become known as ghost fishing and is the cause of numerous issues for underwater life, the most prominent being the loss of fishing lines and nets causing fish and other wildlife to become entangled. Plantee Bioplastics Inc. has developed a fully biodegradable product that could become an industry disruptor. Plantee Bioplastics Inc. received a DFO award to pursue its development and is now looking to St. Lawrence College to identify the impact of various water compositions on their Smart BioPolymer product. The results of this project will enable Plantee Bioplastics Inc. to position themselves and their novel product as an industry leader in a shift away from plastic based fishing gear.
