This grant is to support a conference on Picosecond Electronics and Optoelectronics to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 13-15, 1991. This meeting will consist of invited papers and both oral and poster contributed papers in the following areas: - Picosecond Optoelectronic Devices High speed photodiodes and photoconductive devices; multi- gigahertz and mode-locked semiconductor lasers; integrated optical devices; fast optically bistable devices. - High Speed Electronic Devices Ultra-wideband transistors based on GaAs, InP and Si; resonant tunneling microwave devices. - Physics of Semiconductor Devices Transisent transport phenomena; hot-electron effects; picosecond electronic and optical properties and conventional as well as superlattice and quantum well structures; physics of fast ultra-small structures. - Optical Probing of High Speed Circuits and Devices High-speed analog and digital circuit applications optical logic; fast optical-electronic hybrid devices; mm-wave signal processing; components for fiber-optic/microwave systems; high-speed interconnects; superconducing delay lines. - Device Fabrication Technology and Device Characterization Epitaxial growth; formation of submicron device features; and fabrication techniques specific to multi-gigahertz devices. Diagnostics and measurement techniques using ultra-short optical and electronic pulses; mixing and sampling of ultra- short electronic signals; characteristics of short pulse propagation and transmission lines. - Cryo-electronics Superconducting electronics; low temperature operation of silicon and compound semiconductor devices
