项目摘要

後述の「進捗状況」で記載の事情から、「研究発表」欄に所掲の成果は大阪公立大学人権問題研究センターの公開講座、第171回「サロンde人権」における口頭発表「被差別部落からのアメリカ移民と戦時強制収容」（2023年2月15日）のみとなっている。これは、前年のサンフランシスコ州立大学におけるシンポジウムでの英語報告に、その後に得られた知見を加えたもので、戦前ハワイやアメリカ西海岸で発行された日本語新聞で日本人移民の間での部落差別が報じられていたこと、戦時強制収容の中でも、収容された日系人を対象とする社会調査の担当者のレポートなどで部落差別が議論されていることなどを紹介し、とくに本研究において注目している事例として、部落出身であるといううわさがひろめられていた人物について、差別が収容所における管理に利用された可能性も考慮しつつ、部落差別がどのように収容所において機能したのかについて問題提起をおこない、強制収容政策そのものの解明と、さらに、それと調査との関係性が検証される必要があると指摘したものである。渡航期間を通じて、日系アメリカ人3世、4世のコミュニティ活動家や研究者との交流から、強制収容の経験がその後の日系アメリカ人のコミュニティのありかたに深く長い影を落としてきた事情、すなわち戦後も続いた監視による「モデル・マイノリティ」化というエスニック・スタディズの問題意識も、本研究の主題ではないものの、重要な視点として理解した。なお、本研究の期間内に実現するかどうかは不明であるが、受難と被害の体験として語られがちな強制収容という日系アメリカ人をめぐるマスター・ナラティブの形式をのりこえて、沖縄県出身者や部落出身者などにたいする差別、あるいは構造としてのSettler Colonialismなど、日系アメリカ人研究の新たな課題に光をあてる国際シンポジウムをめざして、協議を始めている。
