项目摘要

本研究の目的は、葬儀業者のかかわる葬儀が一般的になっているジャマイカ都市部（首都キングストンおよびスパニッシュ・タウン）における死者の悼まれ方を明らかにすることである。ジャマイカで暮らす人びとの9割以上は西・中央アフリカにルーツを持ち、そのほとんどは奴隷の子孫であることから、本研究ではジャマイカ国内においてエスニック・マイノリティである中華系やシリア・レバノン系、宗教的マイノリティであるユダヤ系の葬送実践は主たる研究の対象とはしない。本研究が主に対象とするのはジャマイカ黒人の貧困層を中心に流行している、派手さを重視した葬送実践である。本研究課題を設定時、文献研究と現地調査を組み合わせて推進する予定だったが、コロナウイルス感染症の世界的流行により2020年度および2021年度に現地調査を実施することがかなわなかった。そこで2021年度には2019年度に実施していた現地調査データと組み合わせ「墓の形態の変化」に注目した分析にもとづく論文を執筆した。本研究課題において現地調査でデータ収集を予定していたのは①葬儀業者の実態の把握、②葬送の一般的な傾向と多様性の把握、③死者と生者の関係の把握の3点であった。2022年度は短期間ではあったものの現地調査を実施することが可能となったため、②③について墓を対象とした調査を実施した。調査では複数の墓地を回り、故人の生を象徴するシンボルを飾る「デザイナー墓」に関するデータを収集した。なお、この調査データにもとづいた論文の執筆は完了しており2023年度に公刊予定である。
