To examine a possibility of clinical use of the hybrid material (Ti6Al4V with Bioglass coating) for endosseous dental implant, two experiments were performed using Japanese monkeys.(1) Initial bone healing was compared histologically between two implants. There were inserted into edentulous areas of both sides of the mandible, one by tapping and the other by non-tapping methods. Both implants were covered with a muco-periosteal flap of full thickness and allowed to heal for 3 months. All bioglass-coated implants, which ever the insertion method was, showed good healing with direct bone apposition, where as the controls without bioglass coating revealed various amonts of fibrousconnective tissue between bone and implant.(2) Bioglass implants were inserted into the mandible by non-tapping method and loaded with functional stress by means of the superstructure. After 3, 6 and 9 months of function, histological specimens were prepare. Directory bone-implant interface was obviously achived in most regions along the outline of screw-saped implants.
